The Days of the Future Confirmed

By Pastor Benjamin Glaser - Posted at Thoughts From Parson Farms: Judgment, Hell, and the Blessings of the Elect Good Morning! In some ways this is the end of one section and the beginning of another. In fact our Larger Catechism literally says after Q.90: Having seen what the scriptures principally teach us to believe concerning God, it follows to consider what they require as the duty of man. The last eight or so months has had us consider the nature of the Trinity, how we are to see and understand the saving work of Christ, and most recently the expectations we should have as believers as to the nature of God’s providential working in history to bring forth His judgment for sin, and His redemption of the elect for all time. The LC inquiries today continue that message. As we get into them we need to deal with a controversy that you may (or likely) may not be aware of in Reformed theological circles. There is an influential teacher who has come out in favor of a doctrine called Full

Are You Ready?

By Rev. Benjamin Glaser - Posted at Thoughts From Parson Farms: How the Heavenly Intercession of Christ Helps Us on the Day of Judgment Howdy! Of all the constants in the thanksgivings available for the Christian life a certain truth is that our God, as Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, is always with His people. The fearful pronouncement to evil men by the prophet Isaiah that the wicked cannot hide in the heart of the mountain is a great blessing to the faithful, for it shows once more the omnipresence of Jehovah. In today’s look at the catechism we’ll be spending time on what makes that so true, both for the moment-by-moment assurance of faith we need and the way it gives foundation to the eternal mercy of the believer offered in the gospel of grace. Here are our Q/A’s: Q. 55: How doth Christ make intercession? A. Christ makes intercession, by his appearing in our nature continually before the Father in heaven, in the merit of his obedience and sacrifice on earth, declaring his will to

God is All Knowing

By Grant Van Leuven - Posted at Place for Truth: With the recent epidemic of weekly, if not daily, lethal shootings across the country, does your heart not cry out, “Is God paying attention?” Do terrorist bombings, corrupt business and politics, death inducing dictatorships, and human trafficking around the world go unnoticed? Will the silent screams of millions of babies snuffed out in their mother’s wombs reach God’s ears? Will the martyrs ever have their cry responded to, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? ( Revelation 6:9-10 ). Ecclesiastes 5:8 assures us that these yearnings for justice do not evaporate into the atmosphere: If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and justice in a province, marvel not at the matter: for he that is higher than the highest regardeth; and there be higher than they. The preacher acknowledges your heart’s cry over all the injustices plagu

The Last Judgment

Belgic Confession, Week 26 Article 37: The Last Judgment Finally we believe, according to God’s Word, that when the time appointed by the Lord is come (which is unknown to all creatures) and the number of the elect is complete, our Lord Jesus Christ will come from heaven, bodily and visibly, as he ascended, with great glory and majesty, to declare himself the judge of the living and the dead. He will burn this old world, in fire and flame, in order to cleanse it. Then all human creatures will appear in person before the great judge– men, women, and children, who have lived from the beginning until the end of the world. They will be summoned there by the voice of the archangel and by the sound of the divine trumpet. [79] For all those who died before that time will be raised from the earth, their spirits being joined and united with their own bodies in which they lived. And as for those who are still alive, they will not die like the others but will be changed “in the twinkling of

THE DAY OF JUDGMENT

Archibald Alexander - Wikipedia By Archibald Alexander - Posted at Grace Gems : That a just God will render to every man according to his character and works, is a dictate of reason. Conscience also intimates to every man, when he sins, that he deserves to be punished. When we see or hear of great crimes committed by others, such as murders, perjuries, robbery, or treachery—we feel something within us demanding that such should receive deserved punishment. But we see that the wicked are not always punished in this world, according to their evil deeds. It seems reasonable , therefore, to expect that there will be a judgment after death. We are not left, however, to the mere dictates of reason on this subject. God, in his word, has revealed in the clearest manner that there will be a day of reckoning at the end of the world. This day is appointed, and will certainly come. It is not so certain that we shall ever see the sun rise again, as it is that we shall see the day of judgment.

History is His Story

Posted at The Salty Scrivener : Text. Habakkuk 2:5-20 Habakkuk’s depth of understanding increases… History is all being determined, being enacted in accordance with God’s sovereign purpose and plan. Everything is moving towards a conclusion that has been predetermined. History is His Story. God is writing history before it happens. 1. Woe to the Transgressors. Habakkuk begins a long description of the characteristics of the sinful nations. Chapter 2:5-8. A series of woes upon those who transgress God’s law. 11. People who build their own empires and strongholds. V9 – the very houses they build and the structures they put in place will witness against them on the judgment day. 12. People who use violence to further their own ambitions. V12 They desire glory and worship for themselves, but ultimately, only God will be glorified. The completeness of his glorification, his greatness is absolute, in V14. 13. People who bring shame on others. They loved to see others hum

The Justice of God—and the Sins of Our Country

By Rev. Samuel Davies (1755) - Posted at GraceGems.org: "When disaster comes to a city—has not the LORD caused it?" Amos 3:6 It concerns you all seriously to reflect upon your own sins , and the sins of your land —which have brought all these calamities upon us. If you believe that God governs the world , if you do not abjure him from being the Ruler of your country —then you must acknowledge that all the calamities of war , and the threatening appearances of famine —are ordered by his Providence! And if you believe that he is a just and righteous Ruler, you must also believe that he would not thus punish a righteous or a penitent people. We and our countrymen are sinners, aggravated sinners! God proclaims that we are such by his judgments now upon us: by withering fields and scanty harvests, by the sound of the trumpet and the alarm of war . Our consciences must also bear witness to the same melancholy truth. And if my heart were properly affected, I would concur

Of the Last Judgment

Westminster Confession of Faith (1646) Chapter XXXIII I. God has appointed a day, wherein He will judge the world, in righteousness, by Jesus Christ , [1] to whom all power and judgment is given of the Father. [2] In which day, not only the apostate angels shall be judged, [3] but likewise all persons that have lived upon earth shall appear before the tribunal of Christ, to give an account of their thoughts, words, and deeds; and to receive according to what they have done in the body, whether good or evil. [4] II. The end of God's appointing this day is for the manifestation of the glory of His mercy, in the eternal salvation of the elect; and of His justice, in the damnation of the reprobate, who are wicked and disobedient. For then shall the righteous go into everlasting life, and receive that fulness of joy and refreshing, which shall come from the presence of the Lord; but the wicked who know not God, and obey not the Gospel of Jesus Christ, shall be cast into eternal to
